SIRIUS TALKS’19 – October 15, 2019 – Sirius Chair – TBS

On 15th of October, 2019, the SPACE TALKS’19 BY SIRIUS took place at Université Toulouse Capitole, Salle des Séminaires, Bibliothèque de l’Arsenal: “MOVING FAST? IMPLICATIONS OF SPACE BUSINESS ACCELERATION”

This event has been jointly organized by Lucien Rapp, Professor, University Toulouse 1-Capitole, Scientific Director of SIRIUS Chair and by Dr. Victor Dos Santos Paulino, TBS, Professor of Strategy and Innovation Management and Head of SIRIUS Chair.

The acceleration of technological progress in the space sector raises major questions. Is this acceleration real or only felt? How to measure it? What could be the consequences from the point of view of industrial strategies? In which areas of space activities can such an acceleration be anticipated? What will the pace be?

The SIRIUS Chair’s research team takes stock of all these questions and tries to provide useful answers, with the help of five keynote speakers from different geographical horizons, sectors and scientific disciplines. Presentations are made in English, but discussions are held in both French and English. They are addressed to all those interested in accelerating the progress of space technologies and in the very rapid development of a new industrial, economic and financial ecosystem.

  • “New” mission-oriented innovation policies: Market creation opportunities and challenges for the space sector – Douglas K.R. Robinson, Laboratoire Interdisciplinaire Sciences Innovations Sociétés (LISIS), CNRS, IFRIS, Université Paris-Est Marne-la-Vallée, France ; Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose, University College London, UK
  • Fostering and Measuring the development of the Space Economy – Luca del Monte, ESA, Paris Area, France
  • Commercial SATCOM : A Sector in Disruption & Transformation – Deepu Krishnan Pillai, SES, Luxembourg
  • Might the acceleration of the innovation cycle in the space sector result from the convergence of different technologies? – William W Edmonson, North Carolina A & T State University, Greensboro
  • Space Business Acceleration and Financial Engineering. An emerging requirement for the space economy – Bruce Cahan, Stanford University’s School of Engineering

Created in 2013, the SIRIUS Chair (Space Institute for Research on Innovative Uses of Satellites) brings together a team of researchers from two Toulouse higher education institutions (University of Toulouse-Capitole and Toulouse Business School) in the two fields of law and management. It studies all the movements affecting the space sector, participates in the global debate on major issues related to the development of space  technologies, and contributes, through its communications and scientific work, to the reflection on industrial policies and strategies, alongside global decision-makers. Organized each year on a substantive topic, the Space Talks provide a unique opportunity for all those interested in developments in the space sector to learn, debate and question the importance that space activitie have become crucial to the functioning of the global economy.
