Valedictory Ceremony – GMAE 3 IIM Bangalore & TBS – Welcome to the Aerospace MBA India new cohort – May 7, 2018

On May 7, 2018, a Valedictory Ceremony took place @IIM_Bangalore for the #GMAE3 that is jointly delivered with @ToulouseBS #AerospaceMBA. For this very special occasion, Mr. Sanjiv Kapoor has been invited to honor the ceremony. Sanjiv joined Vistara  (joint-venture of Tata & Singapore Airlines) as Chief Strategy & Commercial Officer in March 2016. Prior to joining Vistara, Sanji led SpiceJet through its unprecedented recovery and turnaround as its COO and de facto CEO from November 2013 until October 2015.  He has over 18 years of experience in the airline industry. A native of Kolkata where he did his schooling at La Martinière, Sanjiv received his MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and his BA in Computer Science from Dartmouth College, USA.

In his speech, Sanjiv Kapoor shared his experience at SpiceJet and Vistara and provided a series of possible recommendations for MBA future graduates, especially working in aviation. This industry is highly competitive and ruthless. To sum up his thought, we might consider that “Only crazy people can join this industry… providing they’re crazy about it as well!”. As often mentioned in the frame of the MBA Sanjiv Kapoor acknowledges the importance of doing the job right but it akes more than that to be promoted. Top managers have to identify the individual leadership potential. He then went through 9 pieces of advice:

  • get the big picture
  • sense of ownership (versus email forwarders!) & sense of emergency
  • attention to details (attitude)
  • bringing things to delivery and contributing to the final output
  • responsiveness
  • embrace the customer point of view (critically important)
  • human decency (no bad & short term abusive profits on customer mistakes)
  • cross-departmental teams
  • Passion (generating new ideas, providing constructive feedback even if not expected)
  • Lead by example, a role model
